Professional Stone Veneer Installation in San Diego

Stone veneer installation on the exterior of a modern San Diego-style home

Stucco, painted block and plain drywall can make a home feel flat. Stone veneer installation adds the depth, texture and permanence of real masonry without building a full-thickness stone wall. It is one of the most effective ways to upgrade a facade, a fireplace or an outdoor feature in San Diego County.

East West Stone helps homeowners, builders and designers plan veneer projects and connects them with independent local stone contractors. This page explains how veneer works, which materials are available, what a correct installation looks like and what drives the price, so you can compare quotes with confidence.

What Is Stone Veneer?

Stone veneer is a thin layer of stone, usually about 3/4 inch to 2 inches thick, that is attached to a wall rather than stacked as a structural element. Most residential veneer is adhered: it is bonded with mortar to a prepared surface such as metal lath over a water-resistive barrier, a scratch coat, or clean masonry.

Veneer comes in two main families. Natural thin veneer is real quarried stone sawn into thin pieces, while manufactured stone veneer is a cast concrete product molded and colored to look like stone. Both can look excellent when the substrate preparation, layout and joint work are done correctly.

Benefits of Stone Veneer

Veneer gives you the look of solid masonry on walls that were never designed to carry full-depth stone.

Masonry look at a fraction of the weight

Adhered veneer is light enough to go on wood-framed walls with standard preparation, with no new footing or brick ledge in most cases.

Long-lasting exterior finish

Stone resists sun, salt air and everyday wear far better than paint, and it does not need repainting every few years.

Curb appeal and character

A stone wainscot, entry wall or chimney gives a home a more custom, finished appearance.

Works inside and outside

The same installation methods apply to fireplaces, accent walls, columns, planters and outdoor kitchens.

Types of Stone Veneer

Your choice of material affects weight, cost, color consistency and how the wall ages.

  • Natural thin stone veneer: Real stone such as quartzite, slate, sandstone or limestone, sawn thin. Natural color variation and very long service life.
  • Manufactured stone veneer: Cast concrete stone with consistent sizes and colors. Typically lighter and less expensive per square foot.
  • Ledgestone and stacked stone panels: Pre-assembled strips of thin stone that install quickly and create a tight, horizontal dry-stack look.
  • Fieldstone, river rock and ashlar: Irregular or rectangular individual stones for rustic, traditional or formal patterns.

Where Stone Veneer Is Used

Most veneer projects in San Diego fall into a few common categories:

Front facades, entry walls and wainscots

Fireplace surrounds and chimney breasts

Interior accent walls and kitchen features

Porch columns and pier bases

Outdoor kitchens, BBQ islands and bars

Planters, seat walls and pool walls

Stone Veneer Installation Process

A durable veneer wall depends on what happens behind the stone as much as the stone itself.

01

Site review and material selection

The installer checks the wall type, moisture conditions and transitions, then helps you choose stone, pattern and joint style.

02

Substrate and moisture protection

Framed walls receive a water-resistive barrier, flashing, corrosion-resistant lath and a scratch coat, with a weep screed at the base.

03

Layout and setting

Corners go first, then flat pieces are set in mortar with joints planned so no long straight lines run through the wall.

04

Pointing, cleanup and sealing

Joints are grouted or left dry-stack, excess mortar is brushed off, and a breathable sealer may be applied if the stone calls for it.

Factors Affecting Stone Veneer Installation Cost

Every wall is different, so a real quote always starts with the details. These are the factors that move a quote up or down; published price ranges follow below.

Stone type. Natural stone generally costs more than manufactured stone, and premium colors or full-bed stone cost more again.

Square footage and corners. Corner pieces are priced and installed differently from flats, so a wall with many outside corners costs more per square foot.

Substrate condition. Removing stucco, repairing sheathing or adding lath and flashing adds labor before any stone goes up.

Height and access. Second-story walls, chimneys and tight side yards need scaffolding and more handling time.

Pattern and joint style. Tight dry-stack and hand-fitted patterns take longer than standard grouted joints.

Permits and trim details. Caps, sills, hearths and any required permits are quoted on top of the wall area.

Every project is quoted after a site visit or detailed photos. East West Stone does not set contractor pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stone Veneer Installation FAQ

Sometimes. Sound, well-bonded stucco on masonry can often be prepared and veneered directly. Stucco on a wood-framed wall usually needs an evaluation, because the stone adds weight and the moisture barrier behind the stucco must still work. The installer should explain which approach fits your wall.

Correctly installed natural stone can last for the life of the building. Manufactured stone is also designed for decades of service. Most failures come from water getting behind the veneer, not from the stone itself, which is why flashing and weep details matter.

Neither is better in every case. Natural stone offers authentic variation and colorfastness, while manufactured stone is lighter, more uniform and usually cheaper. See our pages on natural and manufactured veneer for a detailed comparison.

It depends on the scope and your city. Exterior veneer on an existing house may or may not require a permit, while structural changes, new walls or work tied to a remodel usually do. Ask your contractor to confirm with the local building department.

A small accent wall or fireplace may take a few days, while a full facade can take several weeks once you include substrate work, mortar curing and weather. Your contractor can give a schedule after measuring.
