Flagstone Patio Over an Existing Concrete Slab

Project Overview

These photos follow a plain concrete patio being resurfaced with large pieces of multi-color flagstone. Using a sound existing slab as the base is a common way to upgrade a patio without full demolition.

The slab has to be stable and crack-free enough to carry mortar-set stone; a moving slab will crack the stone above it. For materials, the installation process and price ranges, see our guide to building a flagstone patio.
